“I wonder if the great demand for students in STEM fields will lead to a reduction in academic rigor. More students means more research, leaving universities with relatively fewer/less qualified evaluators to monitor and troubleshoot.
Plus, there’s little short-term incentive for colleges to expel paying students. In the long run, allowing below-average students to succeed only hurts the science – but today’s academia is very divided and ethically as far away from STEM as any discipline.
I’m not suggesting that STEM professionals are any less ethical than anyone else; It’s just that ethics has become more of a legal checklist than actual ethical principles. Undoubtedly, there are truly ethical professionals out there who remain uncompromising to their standards; I’m just worried that they’re only academically equivalent to the northern white rhino – old and barren, just waiting to see what’s the last of a once-proud race.”
